People are always asking me "Why is my computer so slow? Damn computer!". So I have a look at their computer and yes they have antivirus software and spyware software. Good, very good! Then I look to see when was the last time they defragmented their hard drive. Oh oh!
So you have a bunch of papers/files scattered across your office or room. How long does it take for you to find the paper/file you need? Wouldn't it be quicker if you had the files organized in a file cabinet? Then you could go straight to the file in no time flat. Defragmentation does this for a computer. Defraging reorganizes the files on the hard drive so the computer can access them more efficiently. This also reduces the wear on the hard drive, making the hard drive last longer without failure.
Microsoft has built in a defragmentor into Windows. If you have Vista, the defrag is automatic. It may be set to defrag at 2:00 in the morning, but it will defrag. So that is one good thing about Vista. If you have Windows XP, then you have to defrag manually. One of the many ways to get there is.......double click on "My Computer", do a right click on the drive you want to defrag. This should bring up a menu....go to the bottom and left click on properties. Then left click on the tools tab on the top. In the middle you will see the "Defragment Now" button. Left click on that and your off and running.
This should be done at least once a month. More often if you move or delete large files. The more often you do this then the quicker the drive will defrag.
Talk to you later,
